We've worked on a number of New Zealand's major solar farm developments, and the pattern is consistent: the risk isn't theoretical. It's panels, cabling, inverters, and tools sitting on open ground for months at a time, often a long way from the nearest police station.
Why solar farms are a different security problem
Most construction security is built around a single, relatively compact site, a building footprint, a fence line, a gate. Solar farms break that model in a few specific ways:
- Scale. A utility-scale solar farm can span hundreds of hectares. A single fixed camera or a guard at the gate doesn't come close to covering the perimeter.
- High-value, easily resold materials. Copper cabling and solar panels are both attractive to thieves and genuinely difficult to trace once they're gone.
- No existing power or connectivity. These sites are built precisely because they're not near substations or developed infrastructure, which means mains-powered security isn't an option during the build.
- Staged delivery. Panels, racking, and inverters typically arrive in batches ahead of installation, creating predictable windows where large volumes of stock are sitting uninstalled and unsecured.
- Long programme duration. Solar farm construction can run for the better part of a year, a long time to rely on ad hoc measures.
The result: traditional approaches, mains-powered CCTV, a single guard doing rounds, hoping isolation itself is a deterrent, tend to fall short on solar sites in ways they don't on a typical urban build.
A cheaper camera system that misses events isn't cheaper once you price in a single serious incident.
The real cost of a theft event on a solar build
When we talk to project managers and procurement leads about security spend, the conversation almost always starts with price. Fair enough, solar farms are run on tight margins and tighter schedules. But the cost of an actual intrusion event goes well beyond the value of what's stolen.
- Replacement lead times. Panels and inverters are often shipped from overseas. Losing a batch can mean a delay measured in months, not days.
- Programme delay costs. On a project with liquidated damages clauses, a multi-week delay caused by re-procurement can dwarf the value of the stolen materials many times over.
- Insurance friction. Claims processes, excess payments, and premium impacts on future projects all add hidden cost.
- Compliance and H&S exposure. An unsecured site with damaged fencing or exposed cabling becomes a safety hazard as well as a security one.
What actually works on solar farm sites
Solar-powered surveillance, by necessity and by design
If the site has no mains power, your security system can't depend on mains power either. Solar CCTV towers with multi-day battery backup are built for exactly this scenario, they go up before grid connection exists and keep running through it.
Coverage that scales with the site
A handful of fixed-position towers won't cut it across hundreds of hectares. Solar farm security needs to be modular, towers that can be repositioned as the construction front moves, supplemented by rapid deployment units for new delivery stockpiles or temporary laydown areas.

Remote sites generate constant nuisance alerts, stock moving in wind, wildlife, vehicle headlights from a neighbouring property. Guarding for the highest-risk windows
Camera coverage is the backbone, but staged equipment deliveries are predictable enough to plan around. Short-term guarding or rapid patrol response during major delivery windows adds a layer that's hard to replicate with cameras alone.
